Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
